 "Protecting and Informing our Residents"

About Us

In October 2010, a group of concerned residents living on St. John's Place led by Randy Gresl, Nicolas Rossier, and Miriam Klein gathered at the St. John's Episcopal Church to talk about safety and increased traffic, among other items. One of the issues that had become very problematic for our residents was that St. John's Place (6th/7th Ave) had become a shortcut for commercial vehicles since the completion of the Barclays Center. Our organization collected over 100 signatures from residents and gathered support from several organizations, including the local church, a kindergarten, Park Slope Neighbors, and mayor-elect Eric Adams - then a state senator. 2015, our petition was approved, and speed bumps were installed on our street a few months later. Unfortunately, our calm and safety were short-lived as preparatory work for the BED798 Water Main construction began less than a year later. Sadly, this project was mismanaged, and hundreds of Park Slope residents voiced safety and health concerns. In the Fall of 2019, SJPCA held a Town Hall meeting attended by more than 200 neighbors to address the disruptions caused by the project. Councilman Brad Lander and all concerned agencies showed up to answer the concerns and questions of dismayed residents. Since then, SJPCA has participated in more than 30 special task forces with the DDC and other City agencies to address problems caused by the construction site. SJPCA is now leading the efforts to ensure that construction is executed following best practices and in the most disruptive manner possible.

Our association is launching annual "Clean our Blocks" events, conferences, and targeted public initiatives to save our neighbors from excessive traffic and unsafe city projects.

SJCA (formerly SJPCA), also known as the St.Johns Community, strives to develop a caring community dedicated to the well-being of its neighborhood residents by providing the advocacy, assistance, or improvements necessary for a safe, healthy, and enjoyable living environment.
